Fresh Fruits from our Garden

One of the things I love most about Papa’s garden is how in the Fall we would haveĀ  grapes and pears, and in the Spring and Summer we would have peaches, strawberries, and raspberries.

Today’s’ New Word is…HORTICULTURE.

Horticulture is the science, technology, and business involved in intensive plant cultivation for human use. Some people are just using the term: Garden Science instead, though.

JoJo and I have our own Pear trees at our grandparents yard, because they planted them for us when we were born. JuJu has a peach tree, and in the Summer we have so many peaches. Once we had so many that we gave a plastic bag full of peaches to everyone on our street. We were going to farm camp then; so we gave a plastic bag to the farm and then they said we can make fresh peach preserve as one of our projects. My sisters and I don’t really like jellies or jams, but we all really loved the homemade peach preserve we made! :-)

In the fall we pick the pears. Since there are two pear trees there is lots and lots of pears. Once we gave my mom’s old friend (she is also a neighbor) a huge bag full of pears it was like 5 pounds. We gave our aunt half of what we gave our neighbor so that we can hold it :-)

I never liked pears before; but I started to like them more and more when I had “our” pears. Interestingly, I still don’t like pears from the grocery store.

One day we woke up and found our pear trees completely empty! We don’t know who did it but one thing we do know isĀ  that they had a ladder because the top was completely empty too! :-(

It upset my late gramma so much, she wanted to call the police or write a Letter to the Editor of the local newspaper. She didn’t do either, but we were all sad that someone would be so desperate to do such an awful thing!

We said that we would plant a plum tree for our cousins, but we never did I don’t think we will now that gramma is no longer alive.

Anyways, we live 3000 miles away from our papa right now, but whenever to talk to him we always ask him how the fruit trees are doing. We remind him that maybe we can ask him if he can bring some peaches when they are ready. Even though we live in California, we haven’t had any peaches like papa’s, and there’s definitely no pears here.

Papa also has grapevines. I love how they are sweet, sour, or both.

During the Summer, we have vegetables and herbs like tomatoes, rhubarb, lots of mint and basil, eggplant, hot peppers, dill, and scallion. Isn’t it cool how we have all this stuff!?

When we have strawberries , raspberries, and peaches; I can make fresh smoothies too!

  1. Hi GiGi.

That’s so wonderful having your own pear tree! It makes me want to go there and try some pears myself! I’m very sad that your Gramma died :( But five pounds of pears is allot! I enjoyed this post and I hope you will be able to see your papa and all the fruits and vegetables in his garden soon. And your trees :)

Yeah, It’s GREAT having our own trees, ones JuJu’s peach tree had so many peaches that the branches where going to break!

There were also a lot of pears! We gave five pounds to our neighbors, and still had more! I really miss my tree, and my papa! I also can’t wait to bite one of our yummy strawberries too…
